The panel of judges for 2009 is chaired for the tenth year by the Editor-in-Chief of International Homes, Helen Shield, along with distinguished experts in the field of property, design and construction, property writers and fellow sponsors.

In case(s) where a judge may be deemed to have a conflict of interest with any participating entrants the judge will not be involved in the region or family of categories where conflict may occur.

All judges participting do not receive any payment or other form of remuneration from the organisers.

Helen Shield - Editor in Chief - International Homes Magazine

As Co-founder and Editor in Chief of the International Homes Magazine and The International World’s Best property titles, Helen has built up a sound knowledge of the trends and moods within the residential development industry worldwide. Helen has successfully organised International Property Exhibitions bringing together the house-buying public and international property vendors.   She has been the vice Chairman of the judging panel on the International Property Awards for over ten years and continues to bring the wealth of her experience to the success of the awards.

ARLA Operations Manager having spent 16 years as a letting agent working as a partner in a single office firm before joining a National Group. Was a National Council Member for ARLA from 1993 to 2006. Had responsibility at various times for finance and compliance matters as well as being involved with the conception of Buy to Let. A member of various working parties and stakeholder groups with interest in the Private rented Sector. Has a keen understanding of the problems faced by landlords and agents added to knowledge of tenant demand, area of the market place where landlord supply does not always come up to satisfying tenant demand. Worked in Banking for over 20 years and has and is aware of the problems of the current credit crunch and the changes being made by lenders. Represents ARLA on various bodies with interest in Tenancy Deposit Protection.

Hans is also a member of FIABCI (German President), SIOR (member of international advisors board) and Uberseeclub Hamburg.


Ed Binkley - National Design Director - AIA

judge-edbinkleyEd Binkley - AIA, National Design Director since 1979, has been involved in award-winning design projects throughout the USA, including housing, hospitality, institutional, recreational and commercial.  He designed The New American Home® in 2005 and 2007 for the International Builders' Show and created the 2006 Boomer Concept house for Hanley Wood publications. His long list of accomplishments is highlighted by his most gratifying project, the 1998 Homes for Habitat Design Award, a charity build featured on CBS This Morning and during a 13-week series on Bob Vila's Home Again. In addition, Ed speaks at national and regional conventions, conducts design seminars, participates in residential design trends roundtables and writes articles on home design for national and local publications. As National Design Director, Ed challenges designers in BSB Design's 15 regional offices to deliver the finest in creative work to their clients.

Charles Tyler Clay - President - FIABCI USA

Mr. Clay is also very involved in land sales with developers and private individuals. He is a member of the Realtor Land Institute, Association of General Contractors, Certified Commercial Investment Manager, Certified International Property Specialist, and is the President of the American Chapter of the Federation Internationale de Profession de Immobilares (FIABCI) which is based in Paris.  Mr. Clay earned his BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in economics/political science, and an MBA from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.


Adrian Coolbergen - Managing Director - Starguard Development

judge-adriancoolbergenAdrian Coolbergen is a successful entrepreneur having built up a large horticultural business supplying salads to Tesco. After selling the business in the late nineties he moved into property design and construction resulting in a number of successful commercial and residential builds and conversions. Adrian now works extensively with Savills and Quantum Homes Ltd. on the investment and refurbishment of numerous properties throughout London, Bournemouth and Poole and has won many special awards for sustainable designs in the Poole area. Adrian is the Managing Director of Starguard Development Ltd. and a director of Quantum Land Ltd.


Pat V. Combs - Past President - NAR

Combs is a realtor from Grand Rapids, Mich and served as the 2007 President of the National Association Of Realtors®.  A realtor since 1971, Pat is the Vice President of Coldwell Banker-AJS-Schmidt, the second largest real estate company in Michigan and manages the Cascade, Mich., office. She holds the professional designations of Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR®); Certified Residential Specialist (CRS®); Graduate, Realtor Institute (GRI); and Performance Management Network (PMN).  At the state level, Pat was President of the Michigan Association of Realtors in 1995, and was chosen by her peers as Michigan “Realtor of the Year” in 2002. She was Michigan President of the Women’s Council of Realtors in 1986. Active in her community, she served as chairman of the Michigan Real Estate Commission in 2002.


Iris Dunbar - President - BIDA
judge-irisdunbarIris has worked within a cross section of the Interior Design Industry, ranging from working in the Interior Design division of Building Design Partnership  to an independent practitioner. Her experience has spanned all sectors, working on commercial offices and restaurants to residential and exhibition projects. Her teaching background has been integrated into her career and she started The Interior Design School in the early nineties to combine her design and teaching skills.
She was elected President of The British Interior Design Association in November having served three years as Education Director.
Fiona Duncan - Travel & Hotel Journalist

judge-fionaduncanFiona worked as a magazine journalist and in publishing before writing travel guides and launching a series of hotel guides with her husband, Andrew Duncan: the Charming Small Hotel Guides. In 1998 she began writing travel articles for the Sunday Telegraph where, since May 2006, she has written a weekly hotel review column, Hotel Guru, plus an accompanying website www.thehotelguru.com. She and her husband have two sons and divide their time between London and the south coast, as well as countless hotels in between. When she wakes in the morning, she makes herself remember where she is before she opens her eyes. Sometimes, even after she's done so, she can't work it out!


Imtiaz Farookhi - Chief Executive - NHBC

He has a track record of improving corporate and operational efficiency and effectiveness. A former Board member of the Environment Agency and of the Learning and Skills Council Imtiaz has substantial experience in both urban regeneration and post 16 Education Policy. He has also served on the Further Education Funding Council, on several public private partnerships and as a non-executive on a Training and Enterprise Council and on a Business Link. He is currently Chairman of the National Skills Forum for Construction and the Built Environment and a Board member of the Thames Gateway Urban Development Corporation.


Gillian Farr - Head of Design Laura Ashley Home
Currently Head of Design for Laura Ashley Home, Gillian trained as a textile designer before embarking on a varied career as a designer of home furnishings and interiors with Sanderson and Monkwell, working for markets at home and abroad. As Design Manager at Laura Ashley Home she creates seasonal themes, which reflect the heritage of the famous brand, whilst embracing new fashions and colour trends. A passionately held belief is that beautiful, well-designed, desirable objects do not need to cost a fortune.
Omer Ghani - Sales Director - Former CNBC Arabia

judge-omerghaniPrior to running Aquila, Omer was a key contributor in setting up, launching and running CNBC Arabiya since 2002.  As Director of Sales, he oversaw the development and growth of the CNBC Arabiya brand and sales network in the region.

Omer Ghani became CEO of Fine & Country UAE in March 2009 when his company Aquila Properties LLC joined the Fine & Country network.  Omer has a successful track record in entrepreneurship, media, financial services and strategic consultancy, as well as extensive exposure to global business.  At Aquila Properties he has created one of the finest and most innovative real estate brokerage firms in Dubai.  Omer’s valuable skill-set and reputable company has been a significant addition to Fine & Country.


George Graham - Development Director - Gleneagles Hotel

judge-georgegrahamWith has a total of 35 years experience in the engineering and hospitality industries, George Graham brings the disciplines of these areas to the key role of Development Director at the Five Red Star Gleneagles Hotel.  George joined Gleneagles as Technical Services Manager in 1981 after gaining hospitality industry experience with Thistle Hotels, and a career as an industrial engineer serving the public and private sectors.  As Technical Director from 1987-1992, George was responsible for all aspects of design and construction at Gleneagles.   From 1992-1995 he was Deputy General Manager, responsible for all support departments.  From 1995 to 1998 George held the role of Operations Director and from 1998 to 2000 was General Manager, responsible for the day-to-day running of all hotel operations.  But now, as Development Director, George has responsibility for developing additional products that will enhance the critical mass of the resort and so increase profitability in line with the overall Gleneagles Vision.
Since 1982, Gleneagles has invested more than £46 million and has recently redesigned public areas, The Club and a number of bedrooms and suites.


Christopher Hall - President Elect - FIABCI

judge-christopherhallChristopher Hall, Honoured Past President of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) is currently President Elect of the UK Chapter of the International Real Estate Federation FIABCI and Vice President of FIABCI World Networking & Marketing 09/11. Christopher holds the Transnational Referral Certificate designation awarded by NAR and has, for a number of years, been committed to helping improve the perception of property industry related people and has also strived to get a fair deal for the home seller with regard to the Government’s Home Information Pack s.  Another of his passions is the introduction of property related self-regulation worldwide and has been party to the International Charter encouraging a common code of practice. He is a member of NAR’s International Speakers Cadre and is involved in various property related business and Home Staging where he lives by the 3Ps –Preparation, Presentation and Promotion. Christopher was born and bred in Norfolk UK, has travelled and worked extensively abroad and is clearly, a  keen sports fan being an Associate Director of Norwich City Football Club he also enjoys rugby, cricket, tennis, skiing and golf and says he couldn’t do and achieve what he does without the fantastic support of his wife Wendy and family.


Michael Harris - Editor - Golf Monthly

Mike Jordan - Cornish Stairways International Architect

Mike Jordan of Cornish Stairways and a former Chairman of the School of Architecture at the University of Plymouth is a passionate stairway designer with an international reputation. He has worked for many years on global iconic buildings, most notably the Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince, and many others in the region. Mike also designs stairways for super yachts.  As a qualified engineer with a second degree in Business Management he has a strong background in architecture and has gained much experience in working with some of the world's best architects over the years.

Des Kelly - Daily Mail Columnist

Des Kelly is a Daily Mail columnist specialising in sport and a regular broadcaster on BBC Five Live and BBC1's Inside Sport television show. He is a media consultant for the Hill and Knowlton global public relations agency, a director of the internet company Fastweb and a regular contributor to GMTV.
Des is the former Deputy Editor and Acting Editor of the Daily Mirror, Assistant Editor of the Daily Express, Chief Sports Reporter for Today and a past winner of the Sports Columnist of the Year award. He has been master of ceremonies at a number of corporate events alongside the likes of Jerry Hall, Cilla Black and Arsene Wenger. Des is also a judge for Laureus International Sports Awards and Football League and is Patron of the GB Blind Football Association. He lives in Clifton, Bristol.

Peter Bolton King - National Federation of Property Professionals

Peter Bolton King started work in 1973 with a leading Warwickshire firm of chartered surveyors and estate agents, Locke & England. After working in different departments he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and became the firm’s youngest ever partner. In 1987 the business was sold to Lloyds Bank and Peter Bolton King became an area director. More recently, the firm became part of Bradford and Bingley and he became area sales director for the largest area in the country.   In July 2003, Peter became Chief Executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, the largest professional body for estate agents with a membership in excess of 10,000.  

Earlier this year he was appointed Group Chief Executive of the National Federation of Property Professionals when a new company was set up which now incorporates the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers (NAVA) and the Federation of Overseas Property Developers Agents and Consultants (FOPDAC). 

Peter was awarded an honorary Certificate in International Property by the National Association of Realtors in recognition of his contribution to international agency.

Currently representing the NAEA on various Government committees relating to the proposed Home Information Packs and related matters, he also holds a number of other Industry Board appointments of behalf of the Federation. These include ICREA, FIABCI, Asset Skills and the Ombudsman for Estate Agents (OEA) Board and Council

Peter is passionate about raising standards in the industry and also raising customer awareness of the benefits of the Association.  He continues to lobby Government for minimum standards in the industry.

Roy Chung Yee Ling - Vice President JP Morgan CFA

He is responsible for origination and execution of investment banking mandates for regional clients. Roy graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration (Honors). He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. Roy currently serves on the Board of Directors of the CFA Society of Japan and is also the Chairman of the Society’s Public Awareness Committee. He also serves on the PR & Events Committee of the Asia Pacific Real Estate Association. Roy was honored as one of 20 Rising Stars in Real Estate by Institutional Investor in March 2008. Wilson Lim - PBM Licensed Appraiser

After completing his degree in Commerce he went onto publish columns on property management in leading newspaper, Singapore's Shenyang. Wilson has been prolific in Asia Pacific by sharing his expertise at various seminars and at the World Congresss FIABCI meets in 2006 and 2007. He is a member of various property bodies and his work has been acknowledged with the Public Service Medal presented to him by the president of Singaporein 2006.

Mark is a Marketing Manager for Daily Mail Classified where he leads a team who are responsible for the marketing of 16 categories including Franchising. Mark has worked for Associated Newspapers for 10 years and has spent time working in Marketing for the Evening Standard, Metro and The Mail on Sunday. During this time he gained a MBA from the University of Glasgow specialising in Marketing & Strategy.
Ann Maurice – TV Personality - Interior Design

Californian interior designer Ann Maurice has a truly unique combination of skills and experience that set her apart from others in her field. Prior to her ten-year Interior Design and Home Staging career, she spent thirteen years selling Real Estate in the San Francisco Bay area.

Twelve years ago she introduced the concept of property presentation to the UK on national television. As TV's House Doctor, she has gained a host of avid fans worldwide that tune in faithfully to watch her transform British homes. She has since become one of the top property / interior design faces on British Television, whose programmes attract in excess of 2.5 million viewers per episode

The House Doctor programmes are now broadcast in a number of countries including USA, UK, South Africa, New Zealand and Canada and are rapidly gaining in popularity as in the U.K.

Ann's most recent programme is called ‘Ann Maurice Interior Rivalry’. In this programme Ann Maurice puts hundreds of home-staging wannabes through their paces in an arduous set of tasks to test their design skills. The prize is a chance to start their own business in Home Staging. The second series of Interior Rivalry aired on Channel 5 in the UK in Spring 2007.

Ann has published six books 'Ann Maurice, House Doctor'; 'Ann Maurice, House Doctor - Quick Fixes'; 'House Doctor - Instant Makeovers'; 'The Best of House Doctor', 'The Property Book' and 'House Doctor: A-Z of Design'.

Aside from her filming and publishing commitments, she writes a regular feature for Real Homes magazine, and for a quarterly publication called American in Britain magazine, as well as taking on a host of private design projects.

 

Ann also conducts a series of courses on Property Presentation and Home Staging. Created and led by Ann, the courses cover techniques of Property Presentation, from both practical and aesthetic points of view. Her advanced level courses are designed to prepare and train individuals for a career in residential home staging, with a primary focus on presentation techniques for the real estate sales market.


Jason Marriott - Architect - Woods Bagot

His background is extensive covering all areas of the design process from project start-up through to construction. With well developed concept design skills Jason’s expertise lies at the front end of the design process.
Jason has worked extensively throughout Australia and China and is now permanently based in Beijing where he has been a resident for 6 years. Whilst working in China Jason has been Principal in Charge of more than 48 projects which has given him an in depth knowledge of project delivery, market drivers, and issues that surround projects in China.

James Mattin - Managing Partner - Bond Wolfe

James Mattin has over 14 years experience in the property industry.  Having studied at the University of West of England, James started his career in property at Andrew Grant Estate Agents.  Prior to joining Midlands-based Property Investment & Auction Company Bond Wolfe and becoming Managing Partner at the tender age of 32, James specialised in the sale and acquisition of hotels and commercial property at Christie & Co.  Since joining Bond Wolfe James has been instrumental in winning a number of tenders including British Waterways, and a number of local authorities and has also played a major role in increasing the size of the company’s auctions from an average of 40 lots per auction to over 100 lots.  James has also personally conducted a number of charity auctions for organisations such as Cure Leukaemia and Sense.

With 20 years of experience of built environment design he has led designs for award winning residential projects, hotels, workplace and retail schemes. His expertise spans in scale from new community master planning to individual high quality bespoke buildings.


Bob Nation – Regional / Design Director - Kann Finch Architects

judge-bobnationRobert Nation is an award winning architect with more than 45 years experience in all facets of architecture both nationally and internationally. He has worked and studied in Australia and abroad throughout this time, owning practices offshore for more than 20 years. He has lectured extensively at universities in Australia and overseas, has won design competitions throughout Asia and Australia, and has received a number of national and state architectural awards.

He is currently a registered architect in Victoria, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, and resides in Dubai UAE.
Award Winner in his first year as an architect, Bob won the RAIA Tasmanian Chapter Award for Public Buildings for Latrobe Council Chambers
Bob has taught in architecture schools in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Toronto. Among his teaching roles, are positions at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Melbourne University and Hong Kong University.

He has been a jury member for many design competitions and RAIA Awards programmes.


Fiona Nixon - Chairman - Australia Institute of Architects

judge-fionadixonFiona Nixon has established herself as a premier Architect in the Asia Pacific region. She is currently the Chairman to the Australian Institute of Architects, International Committee and has won a plethora of awards throughout her career.

Currently the Design Director at RMJM, a global firm spanning more than 15 countries and employing over 1200 employees.

Oliver Richards - Director - ORMS Architects

He has headed projects in 4 European countries and school and university design projects at ORMS. These have included educational masterplans and a series of individual buildings. Oliver has recently been elected to RIBA Council and sits on the CABE Schools Design Panel. He is also a governor of a local London school that is currently becoming an Academy. In addition he teaches in the Learning From Practice unit at the Bartlett and is a professional advisor for students from Cambridge University.

He is currently a consultant valuer to the Grosvenor Estate, was recently chair of the working group to revise and re-issue the Manual of Estate Agency for the RICS, and he sits on one of the working groups for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister on Home Buying Reform.

Mark Taylor - Interior Designer - Silent Gliss

From there he moved to Jane Churchill, Colefax & Fowler then onto Laura Ashley Design Service where he worked around the UK and helped establish their franchise businesses in the Middle East. Mark has been involved with 100% Design, Decorex, BBC Good Homes, Grand Designs, The Country Living Fair and the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition, as well as designing show homes and is currently representing Silent Gliss in Central London. He is passionate about good design and architecture.


Anne Warr - Architect & Conservation Professional

A graduate from the University of New South Wales and the University of York, UK, where she earned a Master of Arts in Heritage Conservation, Anne worked for a number of years in Sydney Australia in the field of heritage conservation, including several years as the Heritage Manager at the City of Sydney.

Since living in Shanghai, Anne has written articles for local and international magazines about Shanghai, been commissioned by Watermark Press to write an “Architecture Guide to Shanghai” (published Dec 2007), taught Western Architecture at Tongji University and started a tour guiding business, www.walkshanghai.com. She is also one of the founding members of Explore Shanghai Heritage, a volunteer group which is producing walking tour brochures of each of Shanghai’s twelve Conservation Areas; - the first brochure on the Jewish Ghetto area being published in 2006 and the second brochure on Suzhou Creek published in 2007. Tad Zurlinden - Relocation Expert

Tad Zurlinden has long been associated with the relocation industry. In 1985 he opened a homesearch agency in East Anglia. Tad was a driving force behind the formation of the Association of Relocations Professionals (formerly the Association of Relocation Agents) in June 1986 and went on to become its first Chief Executive in 1987. Tad is still very much a part of the ARP and has worked over the years with successive Council Members to build the Association. Today the ARP has over 200 members. Between 1997 and 1998 Tad was invited to structure the formation of the am Relocation Association becoming amRA's General Secretary following its formation. Again Tad has worked closely with the Association's Council to build an organisation, which is now recognised globally.
